چکیده

The pseudo strain-hardening behavior of fiber reinforced engineered cementitious composites (ECC) is a desirable characteristic for it to act as a substitute for concrete to suppress brittle failure. The use of ECC in the industry is, however, limited by its high cost. To achieve higher cost/performance ratio, ECC can be strategically applied in parts of a structure that is under relatively high stress. In this paper, layered ECC-concrete beams subjected to flexural load are investigated from both theoretical and experimental aspects. Fourpoint bending tests are performed on beam members with ECC layer at its tensile side. The application of ECC layer leads to increase in both the flexural strength and ductility, and the degree of improvement is found to increase with the ECC thickness. A semi-analytical approach for modeling the flexure behavior of layered ECC-concrete beams is also developed. In the model, the stress–crack width relation of both concrete and ECC are employed as fundamental constitutive relationships. The model and experimental results are found to be in good agreement with one another. Simulation with the model shows that when the ECC thickness goes beyond a certain critical value, both the flexural strength and ductility (reflected by crack mouth opening and crack length at ultimate load) will significantly increase. The critical ECC thickness is hence an important design parameter, and it can be determined with the theoretical approach developed in the present work. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Retrofitting of Reinforced Concrete Beams with Steel Fiber Reinforced Composite Jackets

In the present study, a new method for retrofitting reinforced concrete beam is introduced in which steel-concrete composite jackets containing steel fiber is used. For this purpose, 75% of the peripheral surface of reinforced concrete beams was initially reinforced using steel plates and bolts, and steel fiber reinforced concrete was used between the steel plates and the peripheral surfaces of...

Constitutive Behavior and Finite Element Analysis of FRP Composite and Concrete Members

The present study concerns compressive and flexural constitutive models incorporated into an isoparametric beam finite element scheme for fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) and concrete composites, using their multi-axial constitutive behavior. The constitutive behavior of concrete was treated in triaxial stress states as an orthotropic hypoelasticity-based formulation to determine the confinement ...

Flexural Behavior of Reinforced HPFRCC Beams

High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composite (HPFRCC) materials exhibit strain hardening behavior with multiple cracking under tensile loading. In this paper, experimental and parametric studies are performed to assess the influence of using HPFRCC material instead of normal concrete in reinforced concrete beams. After calibrating the experimental results, the analytical results inc...

Reinforced Ecc - an Evolution from Materials to Structures

While significant advances have been made in concrete materials and in concrete structures over the last decade, research in materials and in structural engineering are often carried out separately. As a result, opportunities in major leaps in structural performance may be missed, or research emphasis in materials development may be misguided. This paper introduces the concept of integrated str...

Effect of Adhesive Viscoelasticity on the Creep Behaviour of FRP Strengthened Concrete Beams

This paper focuses on the effect of the viscoelasticity of the adhesive layer on the flexural creep response of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with composite materials. A theoretical model is developed, which considers the strengthened beam as a layered structure that consists of the reinforced concrete beam, the adhesive layer, and the FRP strip, and accounts for the creep of each comp...
